Wall Design Process – Interview with the Interior designer Lucy Andrews

What part of the wall panel design process is the easiest to complete, and which part is the most challenging?

Creating is the stage that I enjoy the most and consider to be the "simplest." Therefore, the work that is done at the very start, when the interior is being created, "is born." Stunning concepts, textures, and new 3D wall panels designs, in addition to practical ideas, are developed. We put a strong emphasis on wall panel visualisations, sources of inspiration, furniture, and the project's overall aesthetic. The most challenging parts are always the installations, inspections, and difficult clients. Work on a construction site is typically stressful because it involves following plans and dealing with unexpected delays.

Which step of the wall design process do you enjoy doing the most and why?

My favourite part is coming up with the wall design for the inside of the house in my head. Even before we begin working on it, I can already see the installed wall panels. I get ideas from what I observe, usually in the form of insignificant particulars that eventually "chain together" to form the desired outcome. I really enjoy talking with different customers. My view is that communication is the cornerstone of developing a high-quality and aesthetically pleasing interior. The wall-design process is comparable to painting a picture.

How exactly do you go about pairing different wall panel designs with different interiors, and where do you find the inspiration for your work?

I get inspiration from a great number of sources. Sometimes interesting things catch my eye when I'm on vacation somewhere—walking around, seeing some buildings, or standing in a traffic jam—and I do my best to take them all in. It's almost as if you come across some interesting finer details, and while you don't implement them one-by-one into the project because that wouldn't be appropriate, they do spark some kind of thought process and lead to the production of something on the basis of or as a result of the observation. The Internet is a huge source of creativity; other times, it's the latest wall design innovations presented at trade shows or by wall panel manufacturers. Nature, in all of its shapes and textures, can be viewed as a single, cohesive source of inspiration. A significant source of motivation comes from other interior designers, architects, as well as the customers themselves. Whether it is their profession, passion, or hobby, a favourite thing, a particular colour or texture, something they observed and enjoyed, or something they acquired while away and brought back with them, and then the design of the whole interior wall will revolve around this focal point. We get ideas from websites such as Pinterest and Instagram, as well as the websites of the companies that supply us with decorative wall panels. However, these are merely some ideas to consider. I never make the interior look the same, so each one is unique. We try to customise wall panels as much as we can to create a unique experience tailored to the likes and dislikes of our clients. In the very first step of the process, we decide which wall panel design we want to consider and the size of individual panels. The process begins with the creation of mood boards, followed by interior visualisations. After that, we meet with clients to present our vision of the interior, and if approved, we proceed with prototyping and manufacturing the custom wall panels, or we purchase the stock items for smaller projects.
